Accelerating Research in Electrical Engineering Using Altair Platform – Case Studies

Presentation by Prof. Tao Yang, Professor of Aerospace Electrical Systems in the Power Electronics, Machines, and Control Institute at the University of Nottingham as part of Altair's Future.Industry 2025 conference.
In this talk, we explore how cutting-edge software tools from Altair are revolutionizing the fields of power electronics, control design, and electrical machine design -- presenting two recent case studies that highlight their impact on engineering workflows and innovation.
Case Study 1: Altair PSIM for Accelerated Control Design
In this case study, we will use PSIM’s key feature to integrate DSP module with DC/DC converter circuits, achieving co-simulation. This capability bridges the gap between digital control design and hardware implementation, drastically reducing development time.We will demonstrate how PSIM facilitates the iterative design process by allowing real-world DSP programming scenarios to be simulated alongside complex power circuits.
Case Study 2: Altair RapidMiner for Electrical Machine Design
In this case study, we briefly showcase using Altair RapidMiner AI Studio to develop an electrical machine design tool using Artificial Intelligence, accelerating future electrical machine design. This case study showcases how engineers can leverage the robust data analytics framework of Altair AI Studio (formerly RapidMiner Studio) to achieve a data-driven electrical machine design process.
