DEM Application in Excavator Bucket and GET Design

Samial Hasnat, Senior Design Engineer at Simco Mining Products and Services presents at the 2024 ATCx DEM.

Evaluation of interaction between the equipment and granular material forms a substantial part in the design of Earth moving equipment. As one of the leading Dragline Bucket, GET and Rigging equipment manufacturers, SIMCO has traditionally been using scale models and manual calculations based on approximations to design its products.

SIMCO designs products for use in widely varying conditions. From abrasive sites that need GET replacements on monthly basis to sites where the cast labels can still be seen after years of operation, from bulk material rich in clay to large rocks. In order to improve its products, SIMCO has recently started using and incorporating DEM in its design & engineering processes.

SIMCO’s rapidly expanding customer base now includes a significant number of overseas clients. In addition to several large mine sites in Australia, our equipment are being used in mine sites in South Africa, India, Brazil and the US. We are now expanding our reach to the Siberian region and North Africa.

At SIMCO we are in the process of integrating DEM in our design and engineering process to tailor and optimize our products for specific operating conditions.
