Giving Birth to a Comprehensive Digital Twin

Giving Birth to a Comprehensive Digital Twin

Presented by Dr. Royston Jones, CTO & SVP of Altair’s Automotive Vertical, this presentation provides insights into how today’s engineering programs are combining physics-based simulation, and AI, facilitated by high-performance computing to achieve this ambitious goal.

The definition of a Digital Twin can vary depending on the specific application. A Digital Twin can be developed to capture complex or simple behaviour. Consequently, the sophistication of the Digital Twin will be aligned to the specific application. This often results in multiple Digital Twins developed to capture particular attributes of behaviour. This presentation focuses on the challenges of developing a ‘Comprehensive Digital Twin’ capable of simulating all aspects of the physical asset, a true replicant.

The challenge of developing a ‘Comprehensive Digital Twin’ is daunting but the reward would be commercially immense. The rapid convergence of physics based simulation, data driven AI and High Performance Computing will facilitate development. The presentation will demonstrate concepts of the unique ‘Digital Twin’ and the optimised ‘Digital Twin’. A small Electric Vehicle Battery Pack will be used to illustrate the potential of the ‘Comprehensive Digital Twin’.
