Bill Nitzberg and Ian Littlewood, Altair, discuss the economics of moving to the cloud. Over the past few years, Cloud Computing has moved from the top of the hype cycle to a useful, mainstream technology for HPC. Two major shifts happened along the way: what was billed as an infinite resource has been shown to be constrained, especially when trying to allocate the resources most needed for HPC (big capacity nodes, Infiniband, and GPUs), and the main concern related to going to the Cloud has shifted from security to cost. Clouds may (or may not) be infinite, but your budget is not, so addressing the cost side of Cloud is the real key to unleashing its unlimited potential.
