Using DEM Simulation to Identify and Solve Flow Problems in Transfer Chute Design

Jason Cousins, Modeling & Simulation Engineer Mechanical Group at March Consulting presents at the 2024 ATCx DEM.

Transfer chutes are ubiquitous in mine and industrial processing facilities. Even in high-tech modern operations, gravity flow transfer chutes are relied upon everywhere to move bulk materials between equipment and processes. Transfer chutes that aren’t designed properly can be costly, requiring frequent operator intervention, reducing capacity, or causing process interruptions. With DEM, engineers have a powerful tool which can identify problems, test concepts, and find effective solutions for material flow problems. In this case study, capacity bottlenecks and particle segregation issues are analyzed and addressed using DEM simulation.
