Celebrating and Protecting Our Differences

By Jim Scapa | Chairman and Chief Executive Officer | March 23, 2021

It’s been shocking to see the recent trend in violence against Asians in the U.S.  Perhaps this has been prevalent in society and the news is drawing increased attention to it. Or recent “identity politics” has exacerbated the situation and this is another outcome of social media’s tendency to promote divisiveness.

Initially as this was covered in the media, I almost found myself dismissive of the problem thinking these must be isolated incidents. But clearly for those impacted this is a serious problem, one which is beginning to affect their lives as they feel less safe in our society and worry about their children more.

It’s important we stand up to condemn anyone who chooses to attack Asians or those of Asian descent physically or verbally. We should denounce violence against others, and not tolerate politics attempting to attack those who appear superficially different from us.

One of Altair’s four core values for the last 35 years is to embrace diversity.  A large percentage of our colleagues are Asian or of Asian descent. Diversity and broad, honest communication are keys to the success of the United States and of Altair.

Diversity is the glue that binds us together. Please join me in celebrating our differences and, when necessary, being outspoken advocates for all demographic groups, including Asians and Asian Americans.
