Additive manufacturing technologies have undergone rapid development since roughly 2015 when the “hype” around the topic started. Companies have discovered their main field of interest and their areas of possible AM business cases. The bottleneck however is often linked to the areas of part design and optimization, when it comes to taking advantage of the design freedom offered by AM. In many cases, this bottleneck seems more severe than any bottleneck coming from the technology itself. In the presentation, the author shares some of his experiences related to teaching around the design and structural optimization of AM parts and components.
