As the pace of innovation accelerates, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) is becoming standard practice. Altair, a leader in generative design and AI, enables teams to discover actionable insights, speed up design, and accelerate product development.

AI-powered Simulation and Generative Design Technologies

Altair® physicsAI™, Altair® expertAI™, Altair® shapeAI™, and Altair® romAI™ technologies unlock limitless potential for gaining insights, accelerating predictions, and improving engineering decisions. With seamless integration into Altair® HyperWorks® products, they deliver unparalleled AI-powered simulation and generative design capabilities.

Predicting Physics with Altair® physicsAI™

Altair’s physicsAI delivers fast physics predictions by learning from your historical data. Accessible through HyperWorks, the world’s leading CAE environment, this AI-powered simulation and design technology trains models using any existing simulations including those from older design concepts, similar parts, or different programs. Free from the limits of parametric studies, physicsAI operates directly on 3D meshes or CAD. By leveraging modern, geometric deep learning, physicsAI learns the relationship between geometry and performance for any physics. Once trained, physicsAI models deliver predictions that are up to 100x faster than traditional solvers, enabling teams to evaluate more concepts and make better design decisions.

Emulating Experts with Altair® expertAI™

Capturing the career design engineer’s accumulated application expertise is invaluable for automated design optimization. However, some expertise involves subjective design criteria such as product aesthetics that is not easily translated into quantitative assessment. These subjective design requirements are traditionally handled by a human-in-the-loop, which is incompatible with the automatic design optimization process. Altair’s expertAI technology solves this by training and deploying classification models to emulate experts and account for any subjective design criteria.

Altair’s expertAI technology applies to manufacturing simulation for any physics including stamping, casting, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), electromagnetics, topology optimization result selection, design look and feel, and more.

OEMs leverage expertAI for a variety of use cases. BMW is using it to find optimal designs that meet both KPI requirements and subjective criteria such as crash kinematics behavior.

Reduced-Order Modeling (ROM) and System Identification with Altair® romAI™

The romAI capability within Altair® Twin Activate™ lets you incorporate detailed 3D simulations into a computationally efficient 1D environment for system-level study. Typically, high-fidelity simulation is excellent for detailed system study at the component or subsystem level. But when full-system analysis is required, leveraging romAI to reduce component behavior to its interaction with the complete system shortens solver run time and produces highly accurate results.

In practice, romAI leverages 3D simulations as a source of training data for dynamic or static ROMs. This Altair-created approach requires less training data—only a minimal number of 3D simulations—than traditional data-driven methods. And romAI works with data from any software vendor. romAI produces highly accurate results when operating within the training space and is stable for extrapolation outside of the training space. For system identification applications, you can apply the same ML approach when using test data.

romAI serves many purposes: digital twin deployment, faster optimization and multi-disciplinary analysis, better real-time simulation accuracy, use in third-party software or hardware-based applications, and more.

Rolls Royce: Convergence of Engineering and Data Science

The traditional engineering processes ensure that safe and robust products are being developed. However, the growing demand for innovative solutions in short time scales drives the need for a cultural change in the way we work in engineering. Looking at the traditional product life cycle we see that important design decisions tend to be made early during the concept design phase before detailed analysis or test data are available. Data analysis techniques in combination with classical engineering tools can practically help to resolve that conflict by making more useful information available earlier in the process. Consequently the entire process can become more effective.
